I  was born in Johannesburg on March 19, 1962 of British and Irish parents, the second born of five children. I’ve always been an independent soul and soon after completing elementary school I headed for a Catholic boarding school in Kimberley where I completed middle and high school. Next up was 2 years of compulsory army training specialising in logistics and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant before being accepted at the University of South Africa to study a degree in accounting science. In those days you could study and work at the same time, so I signed a 5 year working contract with Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG) and graduated in 1990 with a Honours degree in Accounting Science (BCompt Hons). I’m an associate member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and a member of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants.  After an intensive 6 year process Canada opened its arms to and accepted my family and I as immigrants. We flew into Montreal-Dorval on March 28, 2001 cleared customs and flew direct to Calgary where we settled and worked for 10 years. My first job in Canada was with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology looking after the finances of the campus capital projects. Accounting and auditing process is similar across the world (particularly in the the Common Wealth Countries) and with the introduction of International Financial Reporting Standards the global accounting family is even getting closer. The tax laws differ from country to country and have to be learned. After SAIT I spent 3^1/₂ years as a senior assurance manager with Hudson and Company, a reputable medium sized firm of Chartered Accountants practising in Calgary. Realising that my North American education would not be complete without venturing into commerce and industry I accepted the position as Chief Financial Officer with Olympia Trust Company (TSXV-OLY). The highlight of the Calgary experience was listing Target Capital Inc. in 2008 on the TSX venture exchange. The death of my Mom in 2008 was a life changing event that again brought change to my life. I threw in the towel and decided to move to Vancouver Island. My wife, daughter and I opened Newera Wellness Centres, a health and wellness business - I’m still active in the business. My accounting and tax clients has always been my first love and in April 2011 I opened Dewar McCarthy and Company in Shawnigan Lake. The local community is fabulous, they are very supportive and I can’t say enough good things about them. We don’t only support the local community we are fully involved and active in the entire southern region of Vancouver Island. I trust that your experience with us will be good one.
